Tarptent unveils Triple Rainbow DW

TARPTENT’S relentless 24-year pursuit of lightweight perfection has culminated in the release of its latest design – the Triple Rainbow DW.

The three-person, three-season tent is based on the hugely popular Double Rainbow DW – a Tarptent mainstay since 2006 – but with capacity for three and weighing in at a shade over 1.3kg.

Some of its most notable features include the option to have the inner clipped to the fly in order to pitch and disassemble with inner attached, or purely as a ‘fly-first’.

It also has dual doors and vestibules for generous gear stowage, magnetic fly door ties, and is made of 20D double silicone coated polyester ripstop fly and 30D double silicone coated nylon floor. Both are rated above 3,000mm hydrostatic head.

The latest addition to the Tarptent range is a matter of personal pride for its founder Henry Shires, who started the company not long after stitching together his own tarp tent to meet his specific needs while tackling the 2,653-mile Pacific Crest Trail in 1999.

“The intention with the Triple Rainbow was to accommodate the needs of young families, those traveling with their favourite pups, and those who simply want luxury living space without paying a weight penalty,” Henry told Ever Wild Outdoors.

“In addition, I will say that we here in America have it backwards with respect to double wall tents and ‘fly over the top’ construction.”

Most ‘American-style’ double wall arch pole/dome tents are designed to set up as interior first and take down as interior last.

“That’s fine in good weather but guarantees a wet interior when that process happens in the rain,” he explained.

“The Double Rainbow DW and Triple Rainbow DW can be set up that way but there are a series of connection points for attaching the interior to the fly such that the whole setup and takedown can happen with fly already attached (as is the case with the original Double Rainbow). For rainy weather use that can make all the difference.”

Further features of the $499 (£388) Triple Rainbow DW include…

  • Large and adjustable high and low venting options help minimize condensation while providing storm protection when needed
  • Partial solid interior blocks cold winds, while maintaining views and excellent ventilation.
  • Easy and fast 6 stake pitch – can be pitched in under two minutes
  • Catenary cut curves for taught stable pitching
  • “Porch mode” provides a large covered space in front of doors, perfect for cooking or staying out of the sun/rain

Unfortunately, the Tarptent doesn’t currently have a UK stockist, but customers can order direct from the US using a shipping calculator.

There are three stockists in Europe. Two in Germany… Sack & Pack and HikerHaus, and one in Sweden… Backpackinglight.
