SEVERAL of Britain’s most visited National Parks have issued fresh wildfire alerts today as the ongoing heatwave pushes upland habitats into dangerously dry conditions.
Rangers are urging visitors to take extreme care, with some areas already introducing temporary path diversions to protect tinder‑dry moorland.
The Met Office’s latest Fire Severity Index shows ‘very high’ risk levels across parts of the Peak District, Brecon Beacons and North York Moors. After weeks of rising temperatures and minimal rainfall, conservation teams say the landscape is now at a point where a single spark could trigger a fire that burns for days.
“Blazes could be exceptionally severe if they ignite in parts of London, the South East and eastern England,” the Met Office warned.
“The combination of hot, dry ground and parched vegetation has created tinderbox conditions across vast swathes of the country.”
Visitors are urged to avoid disposable BBQs, campfires and smoking on open moorland. In the Peak District, several access points near Stanage and Burbage have been temporarily rerouted to reduce pressure on the most vulnerable areas.
