Body of missing climber Evgeniy Glazunov found by a friend during search on Ak-Suu

REPORTS from a remote part of Kyrgystan claim Evgeniy Glazunov – a popular climber who lost contact with his team as he descended a peak on the Pamir-Alai mountain range – has been killed in a rockfall.

A friend of the climber, who was also part of the rescue team as well as the expedition, said he found Glazunov’s body attached to ropes earlier today.

“On the 10th of February, Evgeniy Glazunov and I started an expedition, the purpose of which was to climb Aksu Peak, Kyrgyzstan, Pamir-Alai,” reported Kirill Povetkin.

“On the 12th of February Evgeniy began to climb the route of Chaplinsky 6B, and from the 15th to the 16th the weather began to deteriorate. Evgeniy successfully climbed onto the ridge, climbed the wall and began to repel down.

“The last contact with Evgeniy was on February 16 at three o’clock in the afternoon. After that, there was no communication. Two days later, we started the AKP and this morning we found Evgeniy on the wall. He’s almost down. He had literally one and a half ropes left, and the probable cause of death was a rockfall.”

Rescuers had hoped to begin their search in the early hours of Thursday after being hampered for two days by bad weather, but were forced to wait another 24 hours when Russian airline Aeroflot lost the rescuers’ equipment.

The rescue party, led by Alexey Boyko, Anatoly Syshchikov and Kirill Povetkin, camped at Uzgurush last night before continuing of foot with donkeys at the break of dawn and deploying a drone to scour the north face of Ak-Suu.
