The Artilect Quandary Peak Hoodie sits in the technical mid‑layer category, aimed at users who need reliable thermal performance in cold, changeable conditions.
We tested it in the Cairngorms in temperatures ranging from 0°C to –5°C, with the usual mix of wind exposure and stop‑start movement that quickly reveals weaknesses in insulation and moisture management.
Artilect has opted for a generous, mountain‑oriented fit. The sleeve length is reassuringly long, and the integrated thumb loops remain comfortable even when the arms are fully extended – an often overlooked detail that only gets appreciated when the mercury plummets.
The extended hem (basically, the bit that covers the top of your butt) provides good draught protection for your lower back and upper glute area, which is valuable when layering under a shell in cold wind. Again, this is another of those finer details that confirms you’re dealing with a manufacturer that knows first-hand the conditions you want a garment to perform in.
The fabric’s dense, compact weave gives the Quandary a clean profile. Even the chest pocket zip is almost invisible, which is a perfect example of the precision of the construction.
The Quandary Peak Hoodie uses a Nuyarn merino blend (78% merino, 22% nylon) at 220gsm. This fabric is designed to deliver improved drying time compared to traditional merino, higher loft for warmth‑to‑weight efficiency, better long‑term shape retention, and natural odour resistance.
In practice, the material feels more structured than most merino mid‑layers. Flatlock seams reduce bulk and eliminate chafing points, and the hood adds versatility without feeling intrusive when not in use.
That being said, after just two washes, we did notice some minor pilling where the material had been experience friction with a backpack. However, after further use and more washes, we noted this small amount of piling remained as what we would class as ‘negligible wear and tear’.
Performance in the field…
Thermal efficiency
In sub‑zero conditions, the hoodie provided consistent insulation. It retained warmth effectively during static periods, which is often where mid‑layers tend to fall short.
Moisture management
During ascents, the Nuyarn fabric moved moisture efficiently. It avoided a common merino complaint of feeling damp and cooling rapidly once activity slows.
Wind handling
While not intended as a windproof layer, the dense weave offers slightly better wind resistance than typical merino fleece. Under a shell, it forms a stable and very efficient cold‑weather system.
Mobility
Articulation is strong. The cut allows full overhead reach without hem lift or sleeve pull, which is useful for scrambling or winter movement where range of motion matters. Over a few days on some pleasantly tricky Scottish mountains, we put this hoodie through the full range of movement and noticed one delightfully satisfying aspect of its use – from each ascent to descent, not a single adjustment had to be made. There was no stoppage required to pull a hem back into place or drag a sleeve to where you needed it – it literally acted as an upper body glove that moved in harmony with every stretch and reach.

And not just for winter – having a full zip and hood means it would be ideal around a campfire in the cool evenings of the warmer season.
At £190, it sits at the premium end of the market, but the build quality and field performance demonstrate the amount of research, testing and engineering that has obviously gone into it. The price point will undoubtedly put some off, but if you’re in the market for top level, peak performance, this is a serious option.
