ARMENIA has been named ‘Destination of the Year for Adventure Tourism’ in an international awards ceremony in Berlin.
The landlocked republic was handed the title in the PATWA (Pacific Area Travel Writers Association) Travel Awards.
Judges pointed to the tiny nation’s spectacular mountains and epic hiking trails which are continuing to draw adventurers and thrill-seekers from across the globe.
Climbing and paragliding are understood to be the major areas of tourism growth for the West Asian country which is home to a population of just three million.
“This recognition is a testament to Armenia’s natural beauty, diverse adventure tourism offerings, and the dedication of our tourism sector,” said Lusine Gevorgyan, chairman of Armenia’s tourism committee, as she accepted the award.
“We invite travellers from around the world to explore Armenia’s stunning landscapes and experience the thrill of adventure in a land rich with history and hospitality.”

Climate – Armenia’s climate is described as ‘highland continental’ and, while largely dry, it has an average annual rainfall of 550mm. This is significantly less in the Ararat Valley with 200mm to 250mm.
Seasonal extremes are pronounced in the Ararat Valley, where the capital Yerevan is located. Temperatures can reach a high of 42C in the peak of summer, or fall as low as -20C in winter.
However, mean averages range from 25C to 30C in summer, with winter averaging -6C.
Highest mountain – Mount Aragats (4,096m).
